About Our Teas

Our teas come from many different countries and some of the best estates in the world. To help you narrow down the options, read about the basic types of teas, below, or take our Tea Profile Quiz to discover what you might be in the mood to try today!  Click here to read about how tea is processed, from plucking to the cup, and the importance of oxidization in this process.

Black Teas: Black teas have been fully oxidized, resulting in a dark leaf and a deep color in the cup, ranging from copper to darkest black. Flavors range from light and muscatel, to rich and earthy. These teas have about ½ the amount of caffeine of a cup of coffee, making them a great choice for morning or an afternoon pick-me-up. Many black teas can handle milk or sweeteners well. Each tea’s description includes our recommendations for steep time, tea amount, and whether it takes ice, milk, or sweeteners well. Shop for black teas  or puerh teas now!

Oolong Teas: Oolong teas can vary greatly from almost green to almost black, having an oxidation level generally of 40-70%. Oolongs are noted for the many steepings often obtained from a single serving amount of tea. In addition, the levels of complexity create a most enjoyable cup. Some even claim that oolongs have been helpful as part of a healthy weight-loss program! Our oolongs originate in China or Taiwan. Shop for oolong teas now!

Green Teas: Green teas tend to have very little oxidation, and often a lower caffeine level than black teas. Fresh and sometimes vegetal in flavor, with a beautiful pale yellow to green color in the cup, green teas are wonderful any time of the day. Check out our section on Health Studies to see the latest on the claimed benefits of green tea as well as all the other types of teas. Shop for green teas now!

White Teas: White teas are not oxidized at all, thus making them the closest to the actual leaf, fresh from the bush. In fact, leaves destined to be white tea are handled as little as possible. White teas have a mild and delicate flavor, and are palest straw to light gold in color. Having none of the astringent edge often found in green teas, these are a favorite with folks looking for a mild tea low in caffeine and high in antioxidants. Shop for White Teas now!

Herbal Blends: Herbal infusions, or tisanes, do not contain any of the camellia sinensis plant, and therefore are not really considered "tea." These blends contain a variety of  herbs, fruits, and roots and are often caffeine-free. This category includes the popular rooibos  and honeybush blends from South Africa, as well as yerbe mate from Argentina, and more familiar herbals such as peppermint and chamomile.
